Drying Laundry in a Japanese Apartment Without a Dryer: Racks, Hangers and Indoor Drying
Most people in Japan air-dry their laundry: on the balcony on sunny days, and indoors on rainy days, in the rainy season and when pollen is high. The basics are a pinch hanger (ピンチハンガー) for socks and underwear, regular hangers for shirts, and either the balcony pole or an indoor drying rack (室内物干し). To dry faster indoors and avoid the damp smell, keep space between items and move air across them with a fan, a dehumidifier or the bathroom dryer (浴室乾燥) if your apartment has one.
Balcony drying
Most balconies have brackets for a drying pole (物干し竿). If yours has brackets but no pole, buy an extendable pole that matches the bracket span.
Check your building rules: some buildings, especially tower blocks, ban drying laundry where it can be seen from outside.
Indoor drying that doesn't smell
- Space items a fist apart; hang long items on the outside and short ones in the middle of a pinch hanger so air flows through.
- Point a fan or circulator (サーキュレーター) at the laundry. Moving air dries clothes much faster than still air.
- A dehumidifier (除湿機) in a closed room dries laundry and keeps the room from getting damp.
- If your bathroom has 浴室乾燥 (a bathroom heater-dryer), hang laundry on the bathroom pole, close the door and run the 乾燥 mode.
- Detergents labelled 部屋干し are made for indoor drying.
No pole indoors? Options that don't damage the walls
A freestanding drying rack (室内物干しスタンド) folds away when not in use. A tension rod (突っ張り棒 / 突っ張り物干し) fits between two walls or between floor and ceiling without drilling, which matters in rented apartments.

- How do I dry clothes in Japan in the rainy season?
- Dry indoors with good air flow: space items out and use a fan, a dehumidifier or the bathroom dryer if you have one.
- Can I hang laundry on my balcony in Japan?
- Usually yes, but some buildings ban it where it can be seen from outside. Check your building rules.
